THE CUBAN SANDWICH CO.

The Cuban Sandwich Co. offer a wide variety of sandwiches with many different fillings. When ordering you have the choice of getting your bread roll toasted or having it fresh. All the rolls are made to order and as the van is popular it can get quite busy.

The guys at the Cuban Sandwich Co. have both Facebook and Twitter pages that allow people to keep track of them. With nearly 700 ‘likes’ on Facebook and close to 400 followers on Twitter, there are constant updates and photos being posted to keep everyone up to date.

The van itself is fairly easy to find with its colourful exterior. It’s by no means a large van and you wonder how they are able to operate in such a small space, but the quality of the sandwiches speaks for itself.

BUTTY'S FOOD TRUCK

Butty’s focuses on making the best burgers money can buy. The truck also serves cheesy chips that are amazing. Everyone I have spoken to who have had the privilege to taste one of the burgers available have all raved about them. All the burgers are very affordable and in most cases are cheaper than those you would normally get from the so called “gourmet” burger places.

Butty’s is amazing at the social media game. They are constantly updating their followers with dates and locations and they post plenty of photos. Currently on Facebook they have just over 1,200 ‘likes’ with over 200 followers on Twitter. They are one of the only food trucks I have come across that has used Twitter to promote their brand. I think this gives Butty’s a huge advantage, as they aren’t focusing on just one form of social media. As crazy as it may seem, not everyone uses Facebook, some people prefer to use just Twitter. This is how Butty’s is able to reach a wide range of people and keep all their loyal supporters up to date.

Vince's Woodfried Pizza

If you are hungry and are looking for something tasty to fill you up then go no further than Vince’s Woodfried Pizza. Don’t worry though if you don’t feel you can eat an entire pizza, as they offer pizza by the slice for those with not as big an appetite as others. All the favourites are available with many more options available.

As far as an online presence goes, Vince’s Woodfried Pizza truck has a Facebook page yet they fail to update it and they only offer a handful of photos showing people what they can expect when they order a pizza.

JUMPLINGS

A food van that focuses on Dumplings, I am in heaven. I found this van in Perth on a Sunday out the front of the Museum of WA. The owner of the van Roy is very nice and easy to talk to. The van started from his idea a few years ago to sell Japanese dumplings (gyoza) by rebranding them as Jumplings as he realized that the word “gyoza” is difficult to pronounce for some. The pan-fried dumplings available from the van are amazing. I ordered the ‘Slow cooked duck Jumplings with Udon noodles’ and the ‘chicken Jumplings with Udon noodles’. Both were amazing but the standout was the slow cooked duck. I’m a big fan of duck but purchasing it from the shop is usually expensive so I was surprised at how cheap and how large the dish was.

All ingredients used at Jumplings are Australian with the majority being locally sourced. Jumplings has not only a Facebook page but also its own website. The website offers a myriad of information about the food van and Roy’s ultimate goals and aims for it. As you are able to buy frozen Jumplings to take home and cook there are also instructions on how to cook them yourself and what to have with them.

The Facebook page gives the location and times for the van along with the usual photos. There are also photos of the construction of the van that are very interesting for anyone considering creating their own food van. With over 1,000 likes on Facebook and constant updates on times and locations, they have made it very easy to find the Jumplings truck.

There is also a website dedicated to Jumplings. The website has everything from the story of Jumplings and its owner, to recipes for the Jumplings. As you are able to now purchase Jumplings from a few select stores throughout Perth there are also instructions on how to cook your Jumplings at home. The website is great and full of information, it would help to update it more often but the link to the Facebook page and the live feed aid in keeping people up to date.

All up I loved the food available from this van. Not only are the Jumplings amazing but so was everything else they came with. The flavours were amazing and I found myself drinking the rest of the soup once I had eaten every bit of cabbage out of the bottom of the tub. I will be hunting this van down every opportunity I get.

COMIDA DO SOL

Comida do Sol is a Brazilian food van offering a range of foods and drinks. This has been one of the busiest food vans I have visited so far, with people queuing up to order their food. I found the van in one of their usual spots down at Leighton Beach across from the surf club. This is a very picturesque location and targets not only people going to the beach but also those who are out enjoying the day and walking along the coastline.

The food on offer is all traditional Brazilian food, with most menu items being unfamiliar to me. The photos on the menu are a huge help as it gives an idea of exactly what you are ordering. I stepped up to the van and wanted to order the Coxinha, however I had no idea on how to pronounce it. It seems as though they have come across this dilemma before and the girl who served me was happy to help me with pronouncing it properly, I’m still not sure how to say it though. However I am sure they are happy to be introducing new foods to people from their own culture.
Aside from the Coxinha, I ordered an Argentinian style hotdog, a Choripán. The first thing I thought when I was handed my hotdog was that the smell reminded me of my Nonno. Garlic, oregano, parsley and olive oil are smells I have grown up with and also happen to be the key ingredients to Chimichurri, an Argentinian sauce.

As far as an online presence is concerned, you can find Comida do Sol on Facebook. They have an impressive amount of followers and will soon hit 2,000 ‘likes’. Much like Jumplings, the people behind the Comida do Sol van are using Facebook to their full advantage with constant updates on their locations and the times they will be available. I’m sure this has helped them grow in to the busy food van business that I witnessed today. Not only is their food amazing, they are also very approachable and willing to help with the pronunciation of their food.
